What Is Customs Clearance for India to USA Shipments?

Customs clearance is the process through which U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reviews imported goods to determine whether they can legally enter the United States and what duties, taxes or fees may apply.

For customers using India to USA parcel forwarding, customs clearance is an important part of international shipping. A parcel leaving India does not simply travel directly to the recipient's U.S. address. It must meet applicable export and U.S. import requirements, and the shipment information must accurately describe the goods.
Customs procedures can involve checking the product description, quantity, declared value, country of origin, classification and other information. CBP explains that imported goods are subject to entry and clearance procedures unless specifically excepted.

Understanding the process before dispatch can help customers avoid incomplete documentation, unexpected charges and unnecessary delays.
